Friday’s Big Question– 7/14/2006
July 14, 2006 |
It is time for the next Big Question, so here it is:
There have been a few stories recently regarding real estate development and its effects on the Charlottesville area. My question for you, dear reader, is the following– What should Charlottesville area localities do to balance the increase in development with the need to maintain the quality of life that attracts people here in the first place?
Be sure to post your comments, and check back on Monday to read my take.

I think Charlottesville area localities should consider developments much like Peter Jefferson Place. There are too many plain boring cement blocks springing up. Development is good, sprawl is bad. I think the new developments going in near Sperry Marine will be very beneficial and will follow similar guidelines. My advice: make everything Jefferson like. I am tired of seeing that but it looks better than the plain boring shopping centers. This will increase the quality of life and keep the qualities that attract so many people. Housing development wise, look to rebuild downtown C’ville. Try to change older neighborhoods to increase value but also to improve it cosmetically. This will not cause more use of land but use what we do not currently. Some neighborhoods are run down and this will help revive areas, like Belmont.
